Anita Laurence lives and works in King Valley, North East Victoria, Australia, with her husband master printmaker Bill Young. Together they operate professional printmaking studios that cater for their own ongoing collaborative projects and those of visiting artists.

Linocuts and printmaking

Anita has been making linocut prints since 1985. Her more recent work depicts the region she lives in as well as Mildura, Tasmania and Ireland where she has visited as an artist. She is interested in depicting the social history of these places.

After graduating in Fine Art-Painting, from Prahran College in 1983 she became a member of a printmakers and painters studio in Middle Park, Melbourne in 1984 with Jon Cattapan, Bill Young & Josephine Rowbury, where she renewed her interest in printmaking. Port Jackson Press first published her prints in 1985 to 1993 then Chrysalis Publishing from 1993 to 2008.

Anita Laurence exhibitions

Anita exhibited at The Muse Gallery of Milawa from 2003-2016, solo and joint exhibitions with her brother Sculptor Malcolm Laurence. In 2013 they collaborated on the design and construction of the St Bernard Primary School 50th Anniversary mural sculpture.

Artist in Residence annually at The Art Vault in Mildura since 2009, her prints and paintings depicting the region were exhibited in solo shows ‘New Work’ 2015, ‘Along The Way’ 2012 and ‘SunRaysed’ 2010. Other solo exhibitions include ‘Horizons’ at Wangaratta Art Gallery 2009; Yalumba Wine Room Angaston, SA 2011; ‘Here & There’, Falkner Gallery Castlemaine 2011; ‘Town & Country’ The Muse Gallery of Milawa 2012

A member of the organising committee for the Annual King Valley Art Show since 2004 she has been strongly involved in her local community. Her work has been in numerous group exhibitions at the Wangaratta Art Gallery.

In early 2009 Anita was a visiting artist with Bill Young at the Cork Printmakers, Cork City, Ireland. Her ‘Corcaigh’ linocut inspired by her time in Cork was acquired in the Open section of the 2009 Silk Cut Award becoming part of the Silk Cut Foundation Collection which is gifted to the National Gallery of Australia.

Her prints and paintings can be found in the National Australia Bank collection; Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection; Silk Cut Foundation Collection, National Gallery of Australia; Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, Mildura Arts Centre, Mornington Pennisula Regional Gallery and numerous private collections in Australia, Canada, China, Italy, Ireland, Japan, UK and the USA.
